What to check before you pick one
- Processor or merchant of record: with Stripe Payments you handle tax registration; with Paddle, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Stripe Managed Payments, the provider is the seller of record.
- Total fee at your price point: 50¢ fixed fees hurt on low-priced products.
- International cards: Polar adds 1.5% for non-US cards; check each provider's extras.
- Agent access: Stripe, Paddle and Polar document MCP servers; we did not find one for Lemon Squeezy.
- Approval: let agents create payment links and invoices, but keep refunds and payouts behind a human check.
FAQ
Can an AI agent take payments?
An agent can create payment links, checkouts, invoices and subscriptions through these APIs or MCP servers. The money still goes to your account, and you remain responsible for what is sold.
What is a merchant of record?
A company that legally sells to your customer on your behalf, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT and handles disputes. Paddle, Polar and Lemon Squeezy work this way; Stripe offers it as Managed Payments.
Is Lemon Squeezy shutting down?
Its own 2026 update does not announce a shutdown. It says the team is building Stripe Managed Payments and wants to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to move there.
